How to Protect Your Metals From Corrosion

Corrosion is a natural electrochemical reaction that can appear as a chemical or atmospheric corrosion.  It’s the process of deterioration of materials as a result of chemical, electrochemical, and other reactions.  Water can also contribute to the problem when it combines with carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid.  When this happens, the water beaks down into hydrogen and oxygen; it then reacts with dissolved iron to make iron oxide, otherwise known as rust.

So, what does this mean for your metal protects?  Most metals are easily oxidized, meaning corrosion poses a great threat to your products. It can even cause parts to break down and become less useful.  Since corrosion can ruin your metal products, it’s important to keep them protected, especially during shipment.  Here are some of the ways you can protect your metal products from rust and corrosion.

How to Protect Against Corrosion

  • VCI paperVCI paper stands for volatile protective inhibitor. It is treated with engineered chemicals to prevent corrosion on metals.  The VCI paper wraps around your metal and forms a protective molecular layer on the surface of the metal.  This protects salt, dirt, and oxygen from causing corrosion.
  • Desiccant PacksDesiccant packs absorb moisture, chemicals, and odors in the air. As stated, moisture can cause rust to form.  That being said, when desiccant packs absorb moisture out of the air, they are essentially protecting your products from rust.
  • Moisture Barrier Bags – Along with desiccant packs, moisture barrier bags also protect against moisture, therefore protecting against rust.

The last thing you want is for your important metal products to be negatively impacted by corrosion.  As mentioned, one of the ways to protect your products against corrosion is to protect them against outside elements such as water, oxygen, and dirt.  To do so you can use VCI paper, desiccant packs, and moisture barrier bags.  At Edco Supply Corporation, we have all of your mil-spec packaging needs.  Contact us to learn more about our products.
